Which horror films do you plan to watch this October?

With Halloween fast approaching us (love it or loathe it). A time when movie enthusiasts have an excuse to indulge in old favorites, or catch up on horror movies they might have missed.

Here's a list of shame. Horror films that somehow are still on my watch-list. Going to try and put that right:

Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972)

The Beyond (1981)

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Kwaidan (1964)

Les diaboliques (1955)

Friday the 13th (1980)

    1. @David: Looking forward to watching them! :) Not sure I'll get through all these in October, maybe that would be overdoing the horror :)

  2. Don't Torture A Duckling is on my list of shame too. So many films to watch...

    1. @Keith: I think it was you who told me about the director Lucio Fulci, I'd be interested to read your review of Don't Torture A Duckling, if you get your hands on it.

  3. Ohh..When it comes to horror movies, my list of shame is longer than I am comfortable to admit. But, I am going for some horror this month with Poltergeist, Saw(only first) and Black Sabbath. I am trying to find Suspiria but surprisingly it's been difficult. If nothing else, I might just go with The Faculty. It's on Netflix Instant.

    1. @SDG: Don't think I've ever heard of Black Sabbath (1963), I'm curious :) Can't go wrong with Poltergeist !

  4. I'll watch Practical Magic as I always do on Samhain. I'm probably going to rewatch Angel Heart too, I love this one. Don't know if I'll find any new good horror movie to see since the genre is in such a bad shape lately.

    1. @Sati: You know what, I've never seen Practical Magic, you keep mentioning it on your site, so maybe I have to. Angel Heart (1987), I saw couple years ago, pretty good, but not my favorite by director Alan Parker-that would be Birdy (1984), or The Wall (1982)

  5. Sati beat me to it. Practical Magic is always on my guilty-pleasure list for Halloween. Other than that...Netflix Instant has a lot of good classics that I've never seen...Creature from the Black Lagoon is on my "to watch" list for October.

    1. @Courtney: Seems as if Practical Magic is one of those movies people can rewatch every year, kind of like Home Alone, or something!
Haven't seen Creature from the Black Lagoon, I'll check the trailer, and see if it's for me.

  6. You've got a solid list right there, two I'd definitely include (if you haven't already seen them) is the original Halloween and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Two perfect, low budget horror flicks.

    1. @Alex Withrow: Thanks for the suggestions. I was considering giving Halloween a rewatch, as I found it in good quality on youtube.
I don't know if I could stomach Texas Chainsaw Massacre again-once was enough for me!

  7. That's not far from my list, Chris. The only ones I've seen are Friday the 13th, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and Sweeney Todd. I also need to see Angel Heart (seen parts of it), Don't Look Now, Eyes Without a Face, Ringu, The Ring, and The Devil's Backbone.

    1. @Josh: The Devil's Backbone I saw this year, I quite liked it, the style is a bizarre mix of children's story and violence, so not sure who the audience is supposed to be. I've seen both versions of The Ring, I prefer the US remake with Naomi Watts.

  8. Our lists of shame are pretty similar. I still need to see Children, Cabinet, House, Hellraiser, Scanners, Altered States and a couple of others I haven't even heard of. Really want to see Videodrome too, does that count as horror?

I just re-watched 28 Days Later and am going to re-watch Saw and will probably end up seeing Paranormal Activity 4 though I'm sure I'll regret it!

  9. @Pete Turner: This week I've seen 2 or 3 from my horror list already,mini-reviews at end of month.
Is Videodrome horror? Well I guess so, maybe a little sci-fi in there also, the best way to describe it is Cronenberg-esque.
The opening of 28 Days Later I was blown away by(the empty streets in London)
Ouch!!! I have not seen the first Paranormal Activity, going to add it!

  10. I like Kwaidan a lot, it is a very beginning of Japanese horror movies, very interesting culture and emotional highlights ;))
    Cheers!

    1. @Night Admirer: I watched Kwaidan this week actually, such a beautiful film, gets under your skin. Thanks for visiting again!

  11. I've seen four movies on your list. I saw Altered States eons ago, and I remember it as being interesting and mind-trippy. :-) I really liked Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. And I had my eyes covered throughout the bloody scenes in Sweeney Todd -- I am truly a wimp -- but I thought it was a pretty good adaptation.

    1. @Stephanie Ward: Altered States looks batshit crazy from the trailer, can't wait! Hopefully I'll have time to see a big chunk of these horror movies that have been in my queue forever.

I don't like the really gory stuff either, so you are not alone there.
Be sure to return at the end of October for reviews!

  12. Definitely try and see Les Diaboliques. Its a great movie, with a few good scares. Probably my favorite off the list.

    1. @Gregory Roy: I'll give Les Diaboliques a try, criterion collection offer some great films

  13. I really fancy picking up the An American Werewolf In London blu-ray for Halloween. But I haven't got my Halloween horror schedule finalised yet - perhaps a bit of Sinister at the cinema might be a good idea and probably Paranormal Activity 4.

    1. @Dan: An American Werewolf In London is a good horror film that can be watched more than once, I saw it a few years ago. I've heard of Sinister. I still need to see the first Paranormal Activity

  14. Damn you are going to be super busy watching all those quality horror flicks. You got to check out that original Night of the Living Dead. Just saw Frankenweenie... good stuff...

Horror films I have yet to see hmmmm I have not seen about half the films on you list so I guess I could start there.... good topic

    1. @3guys: Yes, busy month of watching, maybe I set my viewing goals too high, I'll take it one day at a time. With all this horror might be nightmares in store for me!

  15. I think I'll catch up with Cabin in the Woods, to see what everyone has been raving about.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Bonjour Tristesse: I was in minority who didn't rave about Cabin in the Woods. The first hour was average I thought, last 20 minutes did leave an impact on me, though. Plus there are subtle references to the genre a cinephile might appreciate.

  17. I still need to see quite a few of those as well. Looking forward to your takes on them. I watched Children of the Corn and The Descent over the weekend, both of which were high on my horror to-see list. If you haven't seen The Descent, I highly recommend it. One of the better horror films I have seen in a while.

    1. @Eric: I'm slowly working my way through the list, turning into a horror marathon!
I'll see if I can fit in The Descent. I have mixed feelings about Children of the Corn-more on that later.

Today, I blogged about Out Of The Past (1947) and Moonrise Kingdom (2012) for my 'non-horror monthly recap'. Enjoyed both those films, thanks for the recommendations!

  18. From your list, i'm interested to see Shaun of the dead and Frankenweenie (opehing next week, I hooe I can see it). Also rewatch Practical magic, one of my favorite. I rarely want to see horror films, perhaps thriller.

    1. @Andina: It's ok not to like horror, we can't love everything :)

I watched Practical Magic (1998) last weekend. To be honest I think it's more appealing to girls, oh well, I gave it a try
