Film review: Project X (1987)

You seldom see Project X on any best of the 80s lists, but it really is a gem in my opinion. As another reviewer puts it, it’s easy to like this movie. Especially if you have a soft spot for animals.

The story mostly takes place on a military base, where Air Force pilot played by Matthew Broderik is assigned to help look after some monkeys, but he is at first not told what will happen to them. He turns out to be very good at handling the animals. He develops a friendship with the brightest monkey called Virgil.

I am amazed how well the animals “acted”. The monkeys featured were so good at showing emotions, and I felt a true connection to them. No CGI crap here, thank god.

The movie has a definite anti-militarism theme, which to me is a little ambiguous. Without giving too much away, the experiments are in a way for the greater good. But in the case of Virgil the monkey they have crossed the line. You could argue the experiments are a waste of time, as monkeys react differently to humans.

Never been a huge Matthew Broderik fan, but this along with Election (1999) are my favourites of his films. Also interesting to see Helen Hunt (from ‘As good as it gets’) in one of her earlier roles. She seems to be playing someone older than her age here, or maybe that’s just me?

Directed by Jonathan Kaplan, who later would make more grown up movies like ‘The accused’ and ‘Love field‘.

You could probably call Project X the sister film to Gorillas in the mist (1988). Granted, GITM is a more mature, adult film. Project X is a family adventure.

I recently revisited this movie having not seen it in years, and felt it held up very well and I enjoyed it again, even though I’m in my 20s now. The characters are very warm-hearted, which I like. Rewatching some of these childhood nostalgic movies, I can definitely see a pattern, as flying for some reason appears to be in a number of my favourites.

I give this an 8/10. I feel the ratings for this movie are a little harsh. 5.8 on imdb and 78 % on RT.

Film review: Scent of a woman (1992)

This film always brings a smile to my face. Among my favourites of all time for sure. Why is it not in the IMDB top 250?

I realise this is my second recommendation were the main character is blind, the other being The Color of Paradise, but they are vastly different films.

The dialogue in Scent of a woman is very endearing, so well-written, very quotable, the acting unbelievable. For me Al Pacino’s best film and Chris O’Donnell’s best part as well. Pacino finally won his Oscar for this performance, which is arguably his signature role, where he portrays a weary and bitter ex army man, who has a memorable weekend in the company of 17-year-old O’Donnell.

Like Dustin Hoffman’s performance made Rainman a classic, Pacino makes Scent of a woman something very memorable, powerful and a life affirming film experience.

Even though it’s over 2 hours 30 min, it fly’s by. Highly recommendable. A film you can watch many times.

Film review: Henry Poole is here (2008)

I was a little sceptical when I saw it had received an unimpressive rating on IMDB, but based on positive reviews on movie blogs breathingmovies and theaudient, I decided to watch this film. I am glad I did, great film, which I recommend. Very underrated!!!

Directed by Mark Pellington, it’s about a man who moves to a new neighbourhood. A mark is discovered on the wall of his house and the neighbours become increasingly interested in this spot. It’s a thought-provoking film about faith and perception, but it doesn’t shove the message down your throat. Instead we hear both sides of the theme, which makes it a more complete film. In other words, you can be a non-believer and still get something out of it. It's not a christian film, if that's what you're thinking.


The slower pace of the story makes you contemplate your own faith and how you react to other people’s beliefs. The cinematography is beautiful and the characters likeable. The name Henry Poole sounds kind of like indie director Hal Hartley’s character Henry Fool, I wonder if they got the name from there?

The soundtrack was typical for an indie film mixing contemporary unknowns, and a few established artists. Highlights for me were 'Promises' by Badly Drawn Boy, and a track by Bob Dylan called 'Not Dark Yet'. Listen to those songs here:





'Henry Poole is here' is definitely a movie you can rewatch and one to see with your friends and talk about afterwards. Don’t understand why a number of critics gave it poor reviews? This to me is an above average independent film.

6.5 on IMDB and a surprising 37% on RT.

Film review: Red (2008)

Don't confuse this review with the new Bruce Willis movie Red (2010) or the French/Polish trilogy Blue/White/Red.

Red (2008) surprised me and was better than I expected. Still thinking about the story several days later. It’s about a middle aged man and his dog Red, and some irresponsible youths, who get in his way.

Based on a best selling novel by Jack Ketchum. I liked the slow paced, morally ambiguous story, where you are not sure how to feel. Should he be seeking revenge? And is it worth it? Why is he seeking revenge? And so on.

Despite not being a fan of the actor Tom Sizemore, I still liked this independent film as a whole. Luckily Sizemore only has a small part in the film, even though he is all over the poster.

The film does have a few flaws, the friendship between the dog and his owner is not really explored, which could have been more detailed.

It makes you think how you might have reacted in the same situation. I agree with another reviewer, who says Brian Cox’s main performance makes us feel empathy for him, and makes us want to join him on his quest for justice. It appears to criticize the current younger generation and their behaviour, although not all youths are like this obviously. Irresponsible parents is also a theme in the story.

I strongly advise you to not watch the trailer, as it gives away too much of the story.
