A lot of love for Gravity - totally agree. Does that not mean it deserves Best Picture? 12 Years a Slave is a good call though...can only see Gravity or Scorsese's Wolf beating it.
ReplyDelete@Dan. Gravity could clean up, and I would be fine with that :) Academy might want to spread out the love to 12Y. Personally I prefer Wolf and Gravity for best Pic. But you can't underestimate the important historical topic in 12Y, which might persuade voters. McQueen's work (Hunger, Shame) has previously been overlooked, so that might help 12Y gain oscar love. The controversial slavery torture could favor Gravity, though.
ReplyDeleteIf you ask me, Best Picture, Foreign Language Film, documentary and Supporting Actress are wide open.
I hope Lupita wins, not only because she deserves too but for the sake of Jennifer Lawrence's career.
ReplyDeleteI think the race isn't as predictable as last year. We still don't know for sure who will win Best Picture, there is still a race. Also, supporting actress, the music categories and the technical ones are not all that set in stone.
I personally think Gravity should win Best Picture. It's not my favorite of the year, but it's the definitive film of 2013. It should win. It brought people back to theaters. It's a technical marvel. Got great performances. Please don't give to the powerful but depressing film that no one will want to see after the awards season is over. This is my opinion.
@Cristi B: There are uncertainties, and thank god for that!. If we knew every result beforehand, it would be borrrrrrring :) Best Picture is interesting, Gravity could take it, because it has the momentum of all those likely technical awards. Has a film set in space ever won? If not, it's about time. Ha, yeah, 12 Years is not for everyone, and maybe you are right, that Gravity is the definitive film of 2013, and has a wider appeal.
DeleteI like that category that you added. It makes sense.
ReplyDelete@thevoid99: Happy you approve of the added award category!
DeleteSolid picks. The preferential ballot has me favoring Gravity for Best Picture, but 12 Years could totally win. I love your bonus category by the way, especially your pick for "should win." :)
ReplyDelete@Josh: Indeed, could go to Gravity or 12Y, tough to call Best Picture. Laurence Anyways is easily my fav soundtrack of the past year, hell it could even be in my top 10 soundtracks ever.
DeleteIf you loved my bonus category, you should check out this blog, he has like 10 bonus categories! http://tothemoviesandback.blogspot.com/2014/03/if-i-ruled-oscars-2014-edition.html
Hey Chris, you got a lot of your predictions right man. I also wanted Cuaron, Blanchett, and Jonze win for Best Original Screenplay, glad they all came true! Nice to see Frozen win Best Animation and also Best Song!
ReplyDelete@Ruth: Indeed, 21/24 is not bad :) Only 3 predictions wrong. But in fairness many of the results were predictable, so I'm not that clever. Cuaron was a deserving winner for director, Gravity is a remarkable achievement.
DeleteI prefer Happy by Pharrell and The Moon Song. Frozen did very well with 2 wins out of 2!
Wow, it seems you nailed most of these! Nice job. I was generally pleased with the Oscars this year. Even though I don't agree with every winner, I at least enjoyed the performers/films that won.
ReplyDeleteEric @ The Warning Sign: I did pretty well! It was a strong year for performers, even though there were (as always) performances that the Academy overlooked.
