Johnny Cash - the early days
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Understand Your Man - Johnny Cash
The Ballad of Ira Hayes - Johnny Cash
The Man in Black - Johnny Cash
(He wore the color black for the down-trodden and the poor. Also representing the dark side of Cash’s personality)
Thunderball - Johnny Cash
(A rarity, a James Bond theme song that was not used, instead Thunderball by Tom Jones made the cut)
Bonus:
Chicken in Black - Johnny Cash
(You sense Johnny Cash is satirising his recording contract, the chicken comparison especially. I think it was from the 80s)
Listeners, any thoughts on the music? Which do you think are Cash's best early songs? Did I neglect your favorites? Share your comments below

Johnny Cash is one of the only "country" artists I enjoy. You nailed a lot of my favorites. I could listen to that Folsom Prison album anytime.
ReplyDelete@Eric: I was tempted to add "25 Minutes To Go" from the Folsom Prison album, maybe I should have. Such an original idea to perform in a prison.
DeleteI'm with Eric on this. I love Johnny Cash's music, but I'm not very interested in country music in general. I'd also mention "Cry Cry Cry", "Get Rhythm", "Big River", "Home of the Blues", "Don't Take Your Guns to Town", and "I Got Stripes".
ReplyDelete@Josh: Tough for me to really comment on country music, I feel at a disadvange because I've heard so little of it. I'm sure there's some good stuff if you look in the right places.
DeleteA number of folk albums I enjoy(I wouldn't go so far and name them country albums)
Thanks for those Johnny Cash tracks, all good, I heard them while I was researching for this post!
Thanks for posting all those tracks in one place for me to check out.
ReplyDeleteThey actually have a pretty sweet cover band that Plays around LA,SD and OC called Cash'd Out that I have seen a few times. They put on an awesome show http://www.cashdout.com/home.html
@3guys1movie: I'll be sharing more Johnny Cash in the upcoming weeks, next week his overlooked 1972 album :)
DeleteCash'd Out I have not listened to, if the cover songs are as good as those by Joaquin Phoenix on Walk The Line soundtrack, I'm interested !
