The music of The National (3 of 5)
Album: High Violet (2010) - The National
An album that I wasn't blown away by when it was first released, but I have grown to appreciate more and more.
Favorite tracks:
Wake Up Your Saints
(Could well be my favorite track by the band. I'm pretty certain it's the song by them I listen to the most)
Conversation 16
England
Bloodbuzz Ohio
Sorrow
Anybody’s Ghost
Little Faith

I'm not that familiar with the music of the National though I do love this album and their new one. Right now, the new records I've been listening to are the new Black Sabbath which is really good and I'm going to hear the new Boards of Canada album tonight.
ReplyDelete@thevoid99: I recommend the rest of The National albums as well. Eric agress with me their 2001 debut album is their weakest and doesn't have any stand-out tracks, so I'd skip that one.
DeleteBoards of Canada, I hope to listen to that soon. The promotion was really interesting.
"Wake Up Your Saints" is pretty great. Good call on that one.
ReplyDeleteYou've highlighted most of my favorites as well, though I would include "Terrible Love" (with a preference for the alternate version).
@Eric @ The Warning Sign:
DeleteIf I did a top 10, like you did, I'm pretty sure "Wake Up Your Saints" would be near the top of my list.
I'll give "Terrible Love" alternate version a listen
High Violet is my favorite album of theirs. "Sorrow" just kills me.
ReplyDeleteSaw them live last Saturday. Bitchin' show man. Two hour set. Heaven.
@Alex Withrow: Initially, back in 2010, I found High Violet album a bit samey, but the tracks have a haunting quality that draws you in-both the vocal and the lyrics.
DeleteSounds like you had a great time last Saturday!
I'm looking forward to the new album. This one has some great stuff on it (favourites are Vanderlyle, Lemonworld, England, Afraid of Everyone and Sorrow) but I think my favourite album is still Boxer.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, I haven't heard Wake Up Your Saints (only on the Extended Edition of the album)...just listening to it on YouTube now.
@Dan: Thanks for sharing your favorites. There are gems which are not on the studio albums, several of which I just shared in soundtrack post today.
DeleteWake Up Your Saints is gold, hope you like it!
I’ll have a mini-review up next weekend of their 2013 album.
I wasn't blown away the first time either, but it plants its seeds and before you know it, takes over your brain.
ReplyDeleteLove every song on it, and find a new favorite every single time I listen to this album.
@Bonjour Tristesse: Me too, it took a while to get into the album.
DeleteThe 2013 album feels kind of like a sister album, so that could be good news to you, who loves every song on High Violet
