I really enjoyed it, I think Fincher did a great job providing suspense to a story like this one.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17419133053285491979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-37835369083182154702010-11-01T01:10:59.128-07:002010-11-01T01:10:59.128-07:00@Anything but Bland: Ok, I'l let you know when...@Anything but Bland: Ok, I'l let you know when my flaming lips song recommendations are up ( :Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-45659194038231451492010-10-31T10:37:46.872-07:002010-10-31T10:37:46.872-07:00thanks for your comment! I thought someone would try and defend the film ( ; As my review was fairly critical, but still somewhat positive.

I guess I read so many ultra positive (and pretty uncritical reviews), that I wanted to add it's not a perfect film. I guess I was not the key audience based on what I wanted ( :

You're right, the story is also a character study about alienation and the desire to belong, I missed that in my review. And yes, the music was great, reminded me a bit of score for Fight Club.

Yep, I know there are 10 nom. now, and I am ok with a best P. nomination. I was merely saying, in my opinion, it was not likely to win awards, if the movie had been released during a stronger year. Again, it's my opinion that 2010 has been a weak year in cinemas, some will obviously disagree based on their tastes in film.

Thanks for your commentsChrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-81643339959714890062010-10-29T22:21:35.452-07:002010-10-29T22:21:35.452-07:00Haven't seen this take on the film before, and...Haven't seen this take on the film before, and can't say I exactly agree with it. I don't think Fincher actually wanted to make a movie about Facebook, really -- it was more that there was an interesting character for our times involved in an enterprise we all know about, which is essentially the hook to get you interested in seeing what drives this character. Appropriately, since you write about music on your blog as well, I got a lot out of a podcast interview with Trent Reznor, who did the magnificent score. He said he wasn't interested in it because it was about Facebook -- in fact, he made it seem like that was originally a turn off for him. But then he realized it was really a story about alienation, the desire to belong, the corrupting influence of power, etc. I think if it were about Facebook as much as you wanted it to be, it would be at arm's length and it might be more difficult to care about. I think that Facebook serves exactly what it's purpose should be in the film, and that's it.

However, I do think you have an interesting point when you talk about the desire for money. I don't actually attribute such petty motivations to Fincher himself, but a studio certainly wants to know that a movie can be marketable/profitable. So Facebook does serve that purpose. There probably wouldn't have been a movie at all if it were about the person who started some other company that doesn't mean as much to us -- say, Hewlett Packard. In that sense I guess the filmmakers are manipulating us a bit for profit.

And don't forget, ten nominees for best picture these days, so yeah, I think this one should be in that group. :-)Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.com
