Cronenberg's early films are not for everyone, with the gore. I think I prefer it over Network, because Videodrome is so visually poetic, that it can mean something different for every watch. Network is definitely a strong film too, a very different approach, as you say.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-70799965426705957542012-12-25T15:14:39.351-08:002012-12-25T15:14:39.351-08:00Hey Chris, I just wanted to let you know that I ma...Hey Chris, I just wanted to let you know that I managed to watch Videodrome a couple of days ago motivated by your post.

I have yet to really make my mind up on the film as I have conflicting feelings about it. However, I can safely say I won't be regarding as highly as you did, not even in the most optimistic of scenarios. I do realize where you're coming from though and why it's such a highly-praised cult cinema piece.

When it comes to this subject matter, I think I prefer "Network" from 1976. It is a very different film, not in the least gory or graphic, but with plenty to say about the future of television, mass media and the cultural degradation that has surely come with it. This is not to mention the excellent performance by Peter Finch, one of the best of all time in my modest opinion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-46429373220058819202012-12-20T17:03:34.496-08:002012-12-20T17:03:34.496-08:00You're welcome! I've also been interested in watching "Last Year in Marienbrad" considering how many good and interesting things I've heard of it.

I think it would have been cool to be a part of the first audiences that enjoyed rise to stardom of Marlon Brando. After all, it was such a defining moment in the history of cinema, redefining the acting method and taking the theatrically-driven Hollywood by storm. Having said that, I wasn't particularly impressed with "On the Waterfront" in terms of storytelling but Brando's performance is surely memorable.

Glad to see a review of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Considering when it was made, it's certainly an artistic accomplishment with very few equals, probably one of the most influential pieces of cinema I can think of.

PS. My blog is back on after a lengthy break. I think I'll be a lot more active in the coming months since I'm finally done with academia. Hope to keep sharing in the future.
