Some of ones from 70s and 80s are made-for-TV and may not have an international appeal. I’d go with Abigail’s Party (1977), which to me is the best early Mike Leigh film. Glad you saw the extended cut of Margaret, but I agree the theatrical cut is better. It feels more focused, and offers a more subtle approach to the brilliant screenplay. One of these days I'm just going to binge watch all of Mike Leigh's early films. Even though she makes immature decisions in her personal life, she shows she has a brain in the school debates. I've heard it compared to I, Robot (2004).

I remember you have American Sniper on your best of 2014 list. The combat scenes were thrilling, but I didn't like how it depicted Muslims.

I'll take a look at your post which includes Dangerous Liaisons. I thought it started out great - a smart movie - but then the ending was just a generic one we've seen any number of times.

I liked American Sniper more than you. I was able to put aside personal feelings and see it from the point of view of the main character.

I've always liked Dangerous Liaisons. "Let's start with one or two Latin terms." And the ending is a good conversation starter on which of the two actually had the worse fate befall, them. There's also a great scene between Malkovich and Pfeiffer that I included when I reviewed the film as part of my Sexy Moments That Are Not Sex Scenes category. Here's a link, if you are interested: http://tipsfromchip.blogspot.com/2011/08/movie-dangerous-liaisons-1988.html

I saw Crocodile Dundee 2 before I ever saw the first one, so that made things a little out of whack.
