In hindsight, I didn't enjoy Avatar on 2nd viewing on TV, the 3D eye candy was what blew me away. But I think there is something going on beneath the surfce in both Avatar and Blade Runner. Good point you make, how ahead of their time the messages of these films are.

By the way, did you notice I gave you the 7x7 link award? To dig a little deeper: Avatar is sort about us living in a virtual world...something we do more and more every day. (3-D TV anyone?) Blade Runner was about how intelligent and human we are letting technology become. Both of those messages are ahead of their time...I too thought Avatar was deeper than it appeared to be.

I'm with you...can't watch this all the time. But do still enjoy pulling it out. What's so great about it is the art direction, and how even though the slow pace we can just sit back and enjoy the beautiful set pieces, without all the annoying special effects most science fiction films have. One of the best films ever made, hands down.Matt Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07649474780894390040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-44353377012675683882011-03-08T04:25:20.147-08:002011-03-08T04:25:20.147-08:00@ Shubhajit: Thanks a lot for your comment, well I...@ Shubhajit: Thanks a lot for your comment, well I thought Avatar was breathtaking in the cinema(my first 3D experience), but was not impressed watching it on TV on my second viewing. You're probably right that Blade runner holds up better to repeat viewings and has more substance. I still think it's interesting to compare the two films.

Yep, I'd also like to get my hands on a copy of the 1982 version, you don't see it too often in shops ( :

Re. Children of Men, I think they have more in common than just being sci-fi.
Both are dystopian stories about a trench-coat wearing 30-something-male set in the future. I would agree the future is depicted in different ways in the two films, although the neon street signs are very similar style in both.
Some have called Children of Men the "Blade Runner for our generation". I didn't think Children of men was as atmospheric, though.
I like the message in C of M of valuing each human being and looking after the environment, as pollution may lead to birth problems for women.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619249406686227577.post-34704789561774607912011-03-06T08:44:18.807-08:002011-03-06T08:44:18.807-08:00A very nice review of Blade Runner indeed. I too love voiceovers, so I'm looking forward to seeing the original version of the film someday.

I wouldn't place Avatar & Blade Runner on the same pedestal. Blade Runner was a brilliant film - a movie one could return to over and again, while the James Cameron film was, for me, a mindless (brain dead) blockbuster which is reasonably engaging only the first time you see it.

Anyway, let me not digress. It was really fun reading all the trivia & anecdotes that you've assembled into this review. And yeah, Deckard too being a replicant is sure an interesting thought worth exploring and discussing about further.Shubhajithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02040495040897333606noreply@blogger.com
